- Change your air filter regularly. Now here is an easily remedied mistake that we still see all-too-often. If the filter looks dirty after a month, don’t hesitate—change it! At a minimum, change the filter every three months, even if it appears clean. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work double-time to keep your home, wasting immense amounts of energy in the process. If you don’t check your heating filter religiously, you’re bound to find out it’s dirty in the most unpleasant way possible—on your utility bill! Wasted energy is still energy that must be paid for. A clean, fresh filter is one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck out of your energy bill. Regular filter changes will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the furnace unit, which can lead to expensive repairs, maintenance or early system failure in the not-too-distant future.
