Split System Air Conditioners: What Are They and What Are Their Benefits?

Eventually, it will get to the point that your air conditioner just can’t function as well as it used to. An air conditioner on its last leg not only affects your comfort but your wallet, too. The older it gets, the harder it works to maintain the same temperature. Replacing your air conditioner can be expensive, but a damaged air conditioner can wind up costing you more in repairs. Luckily, there are plenty of warning signs when your air conditioner is nearing the end of its life.

Here’s what to watch for:

  • An air conditioner that’s over 10 years old. Most air conditioners have an average lifespan of 15-20 years. If your AC unit is in the double digits, it might be time for a replacement.
  • Your home feels warm and stuffy. It might sound obvious, but if you start noticing that your home feels uncomfortable, the problem might have something to do with your air conditioner. Feel around your AC unit, if you feel little to no cool air, it might be time for a replacement.
  • Your home is dusty. An air conditioner on its deathbed will have a hard time filtering the air in your home, which can result in excessive dust everywhere. If your home seems dustier than usual, it might have something to do with your AC unit.

What Is A Split System Air Conditioner?

The difference between central air conditioning and a split system air conditioner comes down to ventilation. A split system air conditioner doesn’t use air ducts to heat or cool your home. This can be ideal for small homes or homeowners planning an addition to their existing structure. As the name implies, a split system air conditioner is “split” into two units, one indoors and one outdoors. These systems are built to efficiently cool your home. They can offer lower utility bills than traditional central air systems.

Why Choose A Split System AC

  • It’s easy to install. One great perk for a split system air conditioner is the lack of an air duct system. Packaged or centralized air conditioners are limited by the air ducts in your home, which means you have to install around your air duct system. Instead of connecting the unit to the air ducts, a split system air conditioner only needs two holes drilled in the wall for the copper tubes and wiring. You can install these units just about anywhere in your home.
  • They’re energy-efficient. One of the best perks of a split system air conditioner is its energy efficiency. Since there are no air ducts, there is no energy wasted, because the chilled air or heat is delivered directly into each room. A split system air conditioner gives you more control over which rooms you want to be cooled or heated, meaning you don’t have to run units in rooms that are unused.
  • It’s quiet. If you want some peace and quiet, then a mini-split is right for you. The noisiest parts of an air conditioner, such as the fan and the condenser, are located in the outdoor unit. This means there is minimal noise when your split system air conditioner is in use.
  • It’s easy maintenance. There’s enough inside your home that requires routine maintenance, and luckily your split system air conditioner is easy to maintain. There’s less to maintain because there are no ducts, and split system air conditioners have washable air filters, and easily accessible outdoor units.
  • You save money on your utility bills. Since a split system air conditioner is built to be energy efficient, it means you can save money on your utility bills. Unlike a centralized air conditioner, a split system air conditioner is built to speed up or slow down the compressor instead of shutting it down entirely. This can save up to 30% on your utility bills. Some split system air conditioners may also qualify for a tax rebate depending on the model.

Why Should I Invest in Central AC?

Summer may feel far away, but it’s still a good idea to think about your indoor comfort needs before it arrives. Here in Long Island, we’ve had record-breaking heat in recent years. Because of this, it might be time to make the jump to central AC. Here are some reasons why you should install a central air conditioning system before the summer heat arrives.

  1. Better efficiency. Central air has made some big jumps in efficiency in recent years. If not managed properly, central air can waste a lot of money on unnecessary cooling. However, there are now all sorts of features like smart thermostats, zoning capabilities, and ductless central AC systems out now. These can all cut back on energy waste, especially when the system is running while no one’s home.
  2. Straightforward maintenance. Central air maintenance is fairly basic. All you need to do is give it an annual inspection from a professional. If you give it regular maintenance, the average central air system can last ten to fifteen years. After that, you’re likely better off getting a new system to avoid costly repairs and to make use of more efficient air conditioning technology.
  3. House-wide cooling. One of the most obvious advantages of a central air system is the fact that it can cool your entire house with one unit. While some people may be able to have adequate cooling with one or two window units, any more than that and the bills may become too much. If you plan to stay in your current home for several years, central air is likely your best option.
  4. Much quieter. Your average window air conditioner makes a great deal of noise when operating. This can be annoying during the day and make it hard to sleep at night. Central AC units are much quieter in comparison.
  5. More space inside. Instead of being stuck in your window, the central system for your central air is located by the side of your house. This can help you save on space indoors and keep your house looking modern. No more awkward-looking ACs sticking out of your window!

Prepare for Winter and Perform an AC Shutdown!

In just over a week, summer will turn to fall and the temperatures will start to drop. The cooler weather may be nice for us, but it isn’t so nice for our outdoor electronics, most notably your AC. Not only will you not be using it during the winter, but the outside unit will be exposed to the elements. To safely protect it, you’ll need to perform a complete AC shutdown. It’s a process that requires more than flipping a switch, but Rebmann can help you learn how to do it.

Here’s what you need to do to perform an AC shutdown:

Finish your repairs

You want to make sure your AC doesn’t have any outstanding problems before you retire it for the winter. Call someone to help finish any repairs that your AC needs before starting your AC shutdown. Failing to do so can result in the problem getting worse over the winter and catching you off-guard when you bring it back out.

Turn off your AC unit’s power

Turning off your AC doesn’t refer to whether it’s blowing or not. It’s about whether your AC is getting any power whatsoever. An AC that’s still on may turn on briefly during the winter if there’s a warm spell. This will result in the outside condenser sucking in ice and snow, damaging it. To fully shut down your AC, find the breaker switch for the AC and shut it off. You can usually find it on the side of your house or under a flip-up lid near the condenser. Try not to forget about the breaker switch over the winter. You’ll need to flip it back on when you want to use your AC again.

Clean off the condenser

When you’ve got the power off, you’ll want to clean off the condenser and the area around it. Grab a broom and use it to sweep any debris on or around the condenser, such as leaves and branches. After that, take a hose set to low pressure and clean off the outside cabinet. Next, you should closely examine the condenser to make sure the seals are tight and there isn’t any visible damage. If you see anything, let us know next time one of our professionals helps you. You should also look and see if the filter needs replacing or cleaning.

Cover it up

When the condenser dries off, the final step is to cover it with a waterproof cover. Hardware stores often have them for sale, but a waterproof tarp will work if it completely covers the condenser. Also, make sure you secure the tarp with bungee rope to ensure it won’t blow away.

7 Signs You Need an AC Repair in New York

AC problems never seem to happen when they would be simple to deal with them, especially when breaking down will leave you facing the summer heat. The best way to prevent this is to be able to tell when your AC needs repairs. By knowing what to look out for, you can take the initiative and call us to schedule a repair. Summer in New York can get hot, but with the help of Rebmann Plumbing, Heating and Cooling technicians, we can help you get an AC repair and avoid being left in the heat.

Here are 7 signs that you need an AC repair in New York:

Increased energy bills

If you’ve noticed that your energy bills are creeping up, it might be worth checking on your AC. AC units can get worn down over time and it’ll eventually have to work harder to keep up with its regular performance. Not only does this cost more, but it also hurts the AC’s lifespan due to unnecessary strain.

Strange, loud noises

Modern AC units run quietly, but certain internal problems can cause them to make plenty of noise. There are a few different things that could be causing the noise. There might be a part loose or broken, a component might need lubrication, or a belt might have slipped out of place. Whatever it is, it can be damaging and costly if not repaired. If your AC is being noisy, call us right away!

Moisture

A leaky AC can be a sign of a serious repair job. If the AC is leaking water or has ice inside it, that’s just a problem with a drain tube. The water can cause some mold and mildew, but it could be worse. What you really have to worry about is your AC having a refrigerant leak. Not only is Freon poisonous, but the leak is a serious AC problem. Whatever problem you have, call one of our technicians ASAP.

Warm air

Obviously, you bought an AC to cool your house, not sit around looking pretty. If it’s not keeping the house comfortable during hot weather, it’s time to give it an examination. Our technicians can diagnose the issue and get you back into comfortable temperatures.

Low airflow

A similar issue to the air being hot is the airflow not being strong enough. It might be an issue with the AC’s compressor or possibly the ducts themselves. There’s definitely some uncertainty in this issue, so it’s a good idea to call a professional to diagnose it.

Strange odors

If the air in your home is starting to smell strange, there might be trouble. If your AC is poorly maintained, mold might be growing on the coil inside the unit. When your AC is operating, it’ll spread that mold through the air. That musty smell could be a sign of mold in either the unit or the duct work. Alternatively, the wire insulation inside your AC might be burnt out. This will create a burnt smell around your AC unit. With either problem, it’s worth calling in a professional to fix the issue.

6 Tips for AC Savings in New York

When the summer heat rolls in, you’ll likely want to stay cool. This means you’ll be using your AC a lot over a few months. However, keeping your AC on all summer will generate some hefty electricity bills. There are plenty of things you can do, big and small, to get some AC savings in New York this summer. Let the experts at Rebmann give you some advice on how to stay cool without breaking the bank.

Here are six tips on getting some AC savings in New York:

Stay on top of your AC’s maintenance

When was the last time you gave your AC maintenance? If the answer isn’t “this spring,” you should call us to give it an inspection. Getting your AC an inspection can do a lot to improve your energy savings. The AC won’t have to work as hard to cool, it’ll have less mechanical issues, and any grime built up in your AC will be cleaned out. It’s a simple bit of advice, but it’s very good advice at the same time.

Upgrade your thermostat

Programmable thermostats are a great way to help conserve your AC’s energy usage. A major feature in these thermostats is that they are programmable and can follow a schedule. This lets you automatically adjust the temperature around the household’s schedule, so the AC turns off when nobody’s home. Other useful features include the ability to keep a constant temperature and other high-tech features.

Keep your home sealed

In a battle between the Sun and your AC to determine the outside temperature, the Sun will win hands-down. Because of this, you want your home to stay well-insulated. A poorly insulated home will leak cool air and let in hot air more easily. At a basic level, you can fix this by caulking leaky windows and insulating doors leading outside. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive examination, call one of our experts to check your home.

Close the blinds

If you have windows letting in sunlight, that can make your home hotter than you want. During the hotter parts of the day, close your blinds to keep out the sun to keep the temperature down. In addition, this also helps keep cool air inside your house.

Be a fan of ceiling fans

You don’t always need the air conditioner to stay cool. The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) estimates that a ceiling fan can make a room feel 10°F and uses 10% of an AC’s energy. There are also smart ceiling fans that can be set on a schedule, similarly to smart thermostats.

Get zone control AC

Zone control AC lets you choose individual areas to heat or cool. You probably have one or two parts of the house you don’t use very often. With zone control, you can cool certain parts of the house less or not at all. This lets you save money on unnecessary cooling.

6 Signs You Need an AC Replacement in New York

We’ve spoken before about how important it is to get annual AC maintenance. However, sometimes maintenance won’t be enough to get it through the summer. Nothing lasts forever, and losing an air conditioner can be a major loss, especially in the middle of summer. Of course, maybe you’re just being cautious and planning ahead to know what a dying AC looks like. Whatever the case, Rebmann can tell you the signs that it’s time for an AC replacement in New York.

Here are 6 signs you should get an AC replacement in New York:

The AC reached retirement age.

What’s the age of your current AC? According to the National Association of Home Builders, well-maintained AC units can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. If your AC has reached this point and isn’t working like it used to, it might be time to retire it. It may seem like a major cost, but don’t worry! You can use this opportunity to purchase a modern unit that’s more energy efficient.

The AC has a refrigerant leak.

A refrigerant leak is a serious problem with your AC. The leaking coolant can pose a health risk to your family and the water leakage can damage your home. While it’s possible to fix serious leaks by getting a new coil, it might be a sign you should get a new AC.

A repair would cost too much.

Sometimes replacement parts and repairs for your AC don’t justify their high costs. It gets more unappealing when you’re talking about a unit with an expired warranty. If this is the case, you should pick up a new unit and get a new warranty.

The AC is making strange noises.

Is your AC operating louder than it normally does? AC units generally run quietly, so any grinding, banging, or rattling noises are a major concern. These noises can represent something like a slipped belt or broken motor bearings. If these issues aren’t fixed quickly, you’ll have a costly repair or replacement on your hands.

The AC air isn’t cold.

AC units produce cool air for you. If you turn on the AC and cool air doesn’t come out within a few minutes, there’s a problem. A wide variety of issues can cause this problem, like low Freon levels or a broken compressor. Whatever the case may be, it’s an obvious sign that your AC has an issue.

The AC needs frequent repairs.

You may want to keep an AC operational for a good while through repeated repairs. However, doing this may eventually lead you to spend more than you would from getting a replacement. This is more likely if your warranty has expired and isn’t helping with repair costs.

5 Advantages of a Split Cooling System in New York

A split cooling system is made up of multiple indoor units connected by conduits to an outdoor unit. As the name suggests, these don’t require ductwork, pre-existing or otherwise, to run. This can make them very useful for certain homeowners. Maybe you’re looking for an easy way to cool your home without installing ductwork? Read on to learn about how a split cooling system in New York might be right for you.

Here are 5 advantages of switching to a split cooling system in New York:

Small and easy to install

One of the more obvious advantages of a split cooling system is that it takes up less space than other systems. They don’t require ductwork, which can be nice in older buildings, and only require some small pipes and a three-inch hole in a wall to install. They’re so easy to install and non-invasive, installation could take a single day depending on the number of units installed.

Versatility

Each outdoor unit can have up to four indoor units which can have individual temperature goals. This lets you have different zones to more thoroughly control your home’s temperature.

Energy efficient

Because they don’t make use of ducts, split cooling systems are more energy efficient. Ductwork losses in central forced air systems account for more than 30% of space conditioning’s energy usage. They can lose even more if the ducts are somewhere unconditioned, like an attic. You’ll save money overall by improving your home’s temperature efficiency.

Quieter

Ductwork can cause a variety of noises from debris or leaks, like whistling and banging. With a split cooling system, a professional will remove the ducts or seal the air registers. This’ll make your temperature systems much quieter. In addition, the indoor units are quieter than other units due to their lower fan speeds.

Increased air quality

With traditional temperature systems, the ducts have to get cleaning on a regular basis. Failure to do so can result in a buildup of dust, allergens, and other nasty stuff. Even if you give them a complete cleaning, you can still leave some stuff behind. With a multi-split system, you won’t have to worry about what’s in your ducts and your home’s air will be fresher as a result.

6 Benefits of Tuning Up Your AC

As winter turns to spring and spring turns to summer, New York homeowners will be swapping out their heaters for air conditioning. But is it ready to tackle the summer heat? The people at Rebmann know that it’s a good idea to give your AC a tune-up before the warm weather moves in. Here are six reasons you should give it some maintenance before the summer arrives.

Here are six benefits of an early AC Tune-Up:

  1. Lower electricity bills. No matter where you live in the continental United States, summers are going to get hot. It’s likely that you’ll want to be running your AC for most of the summer. However, that can create a steep increase in electrical bills if your system isn’t in good health. A system with clogged filters and failing parts will need to work harder to do the same work. In addition, having to work harder will wear out your AC and reduce its lifespan. By tuning up your AC now, you’re increasing its efficiency and lowering your utility bills.

  1. More comfort. What would you call an AC that can’t keep you cool? A bad one. Summers can be tough even for modern systems. If you want to keep your home cool, you’ll want our professionals at Rebmann to make sure your AC is running at top performance.

  1. Fewer breakdowns. If you use your AC system this summer, are you certain that it won’t fail to start up? Do you know for sure that it’ll run smoothly all season? If you’re not sure, give us a call! Our tune-ups come with a complete inspection that can identify problems before they cause a breakdown. You don’t want to have to replace your AC during a summer heat wave!

  1. Cheaper repair bills. In the event that your AC winds up needing repairs, they’ll likely be cheaper if you’ve gotten maintenance beforehand. The reason for that is because our maintenance addresses the more costly problems (like air flow issues and broken parts) during our inspections.

  1. Extended AC lifespan. If you want your AC system to stay operational for a long time, you’ll want to give it regular maintenance. By routinely checking on your AC and preventing breakdowns, we can help extend your AC’s lifespan by years. Without regular maintenance, the average AC only lasts a few years.

  1. Better air quality. During the colder months where you never use your AC, various bits of dust and grime build up in it. When you turn it on, all that nasty junk is going to go into the air, which can hurt your air quality and aggravate those summer allergies. When you call Rebmann to give your AC a tune-up, we’ll clean it out, ensuring that your home’s air stays fresh.

How To Prep Your HVAC System For Spring and Summer

We’re all familiar with that first break of winter. You know, you walk outside to get into your car and you can smell the snow melting? It can only mean one thing; spring is upon us. As an Albertson homeowner, there are many first steps to take as far as prepping your home for the warmer seasons. Some of these tasks are more simple such as removing left over leaves from the yard, and other tasks require a little more attention. Such as prepping your HVAC system for those blistering July nights. We know, it seems like we still have a ways to go before we get there; however, the sooner you spring into action, the sooner you’ll be stress free and ready to break out your patriotic swim trunks and fire up the grill for Memorial Day weekend.

At Rebmann Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning we take pride in our commercial AC and heating unit installation. We provide professional and timely expertise in all areas of heating and cooling. So, if you’re here, you’ve most likely already taken the first and most important step, installing an HVAC system. The upcoming season switch serves as the perfect time to spring into action and prepare to turn off the heat and turn on the cool air. Rebmann has you covered this year, schedule an appointment with one of our HVAC professionals. We have our spring cleaning routine down to a science, we’ll tune up your system quickly and efficiently and have you on your way to a long and sunny summer season.

HVAC Spring Cleaning Checklist

Change air filters

The first and probably most important task on our list is changing your air filters. The change in seasons is the perfect time to take care of this sometimes tedious task. Air filters should be replaced every 30-90 days. They are the key to maintaining healthy indoor air quality. If your filter is dirty, the air is dirty. As we all know, pollen is at an all time high during the spring. Be sure to have your air filter replaced before the pollen season hits. Finally, if your air filter dirty, it makes it harder for your system to do its job. This will result in poor air flow and run a high risk of wear and tear and additional expenses.

Duct cleaning

Duct cleaning is not required as often as replacing your air filters, although its equally as important for clean air quality. A professional duct cleaning must take place at least every 5-7 years. During your professional tune up with a Rebmann team member, your HVAC expert will examine the state of your air ducts and assess whether yours require a cleaning this season.

Duct sealing

We understand central air conditioning is a luxury, an expensive one at that. And for that reason we’d hate to see precious cool air escaping out of your home through cracks or poorly insulated spaces in the duct work. In addition to keeping your system clean, it’s equally as important to have your ducts professionally sealed at the beginning of the spring season. This will ensure no air is escaping and in turn will lower energy bills. Keeping your family cooler, and your wallet happier!

Clean your outdoor unit

Sometimes we may neglect the outdoor unit because it’s out of sight, especially after a long winter spent inside. The beginning of the spring season serves as the perfect time have your outdoor unit examined and cleaned. A Rebmann professional will assess your unit and ensure there is no overgrown foliage or other debris that may get in the way of your system running smoothly.

In the case that you notice a pest that made its way inside the unit, turn off your system immediately and contact a Rebmann technician right away.

Test the thermostat

The final step on your HVAC spring maintenance checklist will include testing your system. You’ll want to have this done early to ensure you’re ready for the first heat wave of the season. The last thing you’ want is to neglect this step until the first 80 degree day or night of the summer and be without cool air. During your appointment, we’ll check your thermostat controls and recalibrate the unit if need be.

You should also consider making an upgrade to a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. As described by the U.S. Department of Energy, “Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (six or more temperature settings a day) that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program.” Learn more about the benefits of a programmable thermostat here.
