How to Cut Your AC Bill in Half While Staying Cool This Summer

As temperatures rise outdoors, you spend more time inside to beat the heat. As you may already know, excessive AC use can cause your electric bill to skyrocket. Here are a few things that you can do this summer to not only stay cool but keep your money in your wallet!

Use a Fan

When the heat outside isn’t too extreme, you probably don’t need your AC on full blast at all times. A fan won’t be able to completely lower the temperature in a given room, but wind chill plays a major role in keeping you cool. Portable fans can be moved from area to area for continuous comfort, and ceiling fans are useful as well. Not only do they provide a cool breeze, but they also help to disperse air evenly throughout the space.   Like your AC, fans should only be kept on when you’re using them. Forgetting to shut them off will lead to wasted electricity.

Use Your AC Only When You Need It

Staying cool and comfortable in your home or business shouldn’t mean having to set the thermostat as low as possible. Just setting it a few degrees higher than you normally do can  impact your electric bill (for the better).  When you’re heading to work for the day or you know that you will be out for a while running errands, you don’t need to leave your AC on. Most models can cool things down very quickly when you return. Programmable thermostats can make this easier for you – they can lower temperatures or turn off your cooling system when you need them to.

Keep Curtains Closed

The more you keep your curtains, blinds, or shades closed, the easier it will be to cool your home. During hours of direct sunlight, this can help keep cool air inside and the warm air outside.  If the temperature is already lowered in your house, you won’t need to put as much stress on your AC. This will help you save money on your utilities throughout the summer months.

Keep Your System Maintained

Routine professional maintenance is a must! This allows a technician to fully examine and service your entire system – from the outdoor unit to the ventilation system. If there are any issues or areas of concern, they will be fixed before they have time to escalate. Routine maintenance boosts energy efficiency, reliability, and give your AC a longer lifespan. It also helps you keep the air quality in your home safe! To schedule your AC service, call Rebmann. We’ve got you covered!

Limit Heat Building Activities

When temperatures get higher, you can help keep your home cool by limiting household chores that quickly build heat.  Using your oven or stove, running the dishwasher, drying clothes in the dryer;  these are all heat-generating activities. Instead, you can use the microwave or grill to cook or let your clothes dry outdoors. Finding alternatives for these routine activities will help you stay cool and comfortable indoors while cutting back on your electricity bill.

Signs You Need AC Repair

As the weather heats up, you’ll be spending more time indoors to beat the heat. If your AC is experiencing problems, you should have it repaired before summer heat rolls in. Small problems can escalate quickly, causing an uncomfortable disruption in your home. If it does need repairs, your AC may be sending you warning signals. If you are experiencing any of the following problems in your home, call Rebmann today.

No Power or Start-up Issues

This the most obvious sign that you have a problem with your air conditioning system. Whatever temperature you set your thermostat to, your cooling system should be able to reach it with ease. Turning it on should never be an issue either. If temperatures are high outside, your safety could be affected by a broken air conditioner. If it doesn’t turn on at all or it switches often, you should start looking for a replacement.

Excess Moisture

Do you have wet spots or condensation on your unit? Pooling water should be addressed as soon as possible as it can cause mold or mildew. Not only do they grow and spread at a rapid rate, they can harm your air quality as well.

Inadequate Cooling

Your cooling system should be able to cool your whole home or a designated area within it. If you start to notice that some rooms or areas aren’t being cooled properly, it’s a sign that your system is no longer capable of cooling your whole home. A Rebmann professional can give you more insight into the cause, but if your model is outdated or failing, it may be in your best interest to have it replaced.

Weird Sounds

Your AC shouldn’t be too noisy. Any loud bangs or groans from your unit or duct system should be checked out. It could be that a piece has detached or that debris has built up in your ducts. On the other hand, it could also be a sign of motor failure.

Warm Air

Your AC should blow cool air only. While you use it, air should be cool and spread out evenly into your home. you may have a lack of refrigeration, which can be replenished. If you have a leak, it may be much harder to fix. This should be addressed by a professional immediately, as it can cause other problems throughout your home. If you’ve already spent money on repairs in the past, it’s in your best interest to replace your AC.

Prepare for Winter and Perform an AC Shutdown!

In just over a week, summer will turn to fall and the temperatures will start to drop. The cooler weather may be nice for us, but it isn’t so nice for our outdoor electronics, most notably your AC. Not only will you not be using it during the winter, but the outside unit will be exposed to the elements. To safely protect it, you’ll need to perform a complete AC shutdown. It’s a process that requires more than flipping a switch, but Rebmann can help you learn how to do it.

Here’s what you need to do to perform an AC shutdown:

Finish your repairs

You want to make sure your AC doesn’t have any outstanding problems before you retire it for the winter. Call someone to help finish any repairs that your AC needs before starting your AC shutdown. Failing to do so can result in the problem getting worse over the winter and catching you off-guard when you bring it back out.

Turn off your AC unit’s power

Turning off your AC doesn’t refer to whether it’s blowing or not. It’s about whether your AC is getting any power whatsoever. An AC that’s still on may turn on briefly during the winter if there’s a warm spell. This will result in the outside condenser sucking in ice and snow, damaging it. To fully shut down your AC, find the breaker switch for the AC and shut it off. You can usually find it on the side of your house or under a flip-up lid near the condenser. Try not to forget about the breaker switch over the winter. You’ll need to flip it back on when you want to use your AC again.

Clean off the condenser

When you’ve got the power off, you’ll want to clean off the condenser and the area around it. Grab a broom and use it to sweep any debris on or around the condenser, such as leaves and branches. After that, take a hose set to low pressure and clean off the outside cabinet. Next, you should closely examine the condenser to make sure the seals are tight and there isn’t any visible damage. If you see anything, let us know next time one of our professionals helps you. You should also look and see if the filter needs replacing or cleaning.

Cover it up

When the condenser dries off, the final step is to cover it with a waterproof cover. Hardware stores often have them for sale, but a waterproof tarp will work if it completely covers the condenser. Also, make sure you secure the tarp with bungee rope to ensure it won’t blow away.

7 Signs You Need an AC Repair in New York

AC problems never seem to happen when they would be simple to deal with them, especially when breaking down will leave you facing the summer heat. The best way to prevent this is to be able to tell when your AC needs repairs. By knowing what to look out for, you can take the initiative and call us to schedule a repair. Summer in New York can get hot, but with the help of Rebmann Plumbing, Heating and Cooling technicians, we can help you get an AC repair and avoid being left in the heat.

Here are 7 signs that you need an AC repair in New York:

Increased energy bills

If you’ve noticed that your energy bills are creeping up, it might be worth checking on your AC. AC units can get worn down over time and it’ll eventually have to work harder to keep up with its regular performance. Not only does this cost more, but it also hurts the AC’s lifespan due to unnecessary strain.

Strange, loud noises

Modern AC units run quietly, but certain internal problems can cause them to make plenty of noise. There are a few different things that could be causing the noise. There might be a part loose or broken, a component might need lubrication, or a belt might have slipped out of place. Whatever it is, it can be damaging and costly if not repaired. If your AC is being noisy, call us right away!

Moisture

A leaky AC can be a sign of a serious repair job. If the AC is leaking water or has ice inside it, that’s just a problem with a drain tube. The water can cause some mold and mildew, but it could be worse. What you really have to worry about is your AC having a refrigerant leak. Not only is Freon poisonous, but the leak is a serious AC problem. Whatever problem you have, call one of our technicians ASAP.

Warm air

Obviously, you bought an AC to cool your house, not sit around looking pretty. If it’s not keeping the house comfortable during hot weather, it’s time to give it an examination. Our technicians can diagnose the issue and get you back into comfortable temperatures.

Low airflow

A similar issue to the air being hot is the airflow not being strong enough. It might be an issue with the AC’s compressor or possibly the ducts themselves. There’s definitely some uncertainty in this issue, so it’s a good idea to call a professional to diagnose it.

Strange odors

If the air in your home is starting to smell strange, there might be trouble. If your AC is poorly maintained, mold might be growing on the coil inside the unit. When your AC is operating, it’ll spread that mold through the air. That musty smell could be a sign of mold in either the unit or the duct work. Alternatively, the wire insulation inside your AC might be burnt out. This will create a burnt smell around your AC unit. With either problem, it’s worth calling in a professional to fix the issue.

Keep The Bugs Out This Summer by Using Your AC

Are You Near Lakes, Ponds, Marshes or Swamps?

Standing water is a breeding ground for insects. Keeping the windows open to enjoy the weather is nice, but it can let the bugs right into your home. These small bugs are capable of flying or crawling through the smallest of holes in search for food.

They may be looking for food scraps, or they may be looking for you! Inevitably, some will always find their way inside. If you notice an increase in their number, you may want to switch on your AC. Not only will it keep you cool, it can help to keep the bugs out!

Make Your AC Insect Proof

If you have a window unit, be sure that the edges are secure and that there aren’t any spaces. Because they sit directly on your windowsill and connect in through your window, their shape can be compromised. If bugs are still finding a way inside, you should consider the following:

  • Improper installation. Make sure that your AC is installed correctly, and that no parts are broken, warped, or missing.
  • Seal the gaps. For gaps that won’t go away, use some foam installation strips and duct tape to seal it.

Different Models Make a Difference

If your window unit continues to let the bugs in, you may want to consider an alternative. If central air isn’t an option, you may want to look into a ductless mini split installation. With two small pieces, an outdoor unit and an indoor unit, ductless mini split systems are ideal for heating rooms or designated zones of your home-without letting the bugs in. Other benefits include:

  • More control by only cooling or heating the rooms you want, and not your entire home
  • Cutting down your utility bill
  • Using less energy than electricity or oil
  • Improved quality air circulation from room to room
  • Decreasing the amount of allergens in the air
  • Improved aesthetics since a ductless mini-split system only requires a three-inch hole cut in your outside wall

Get Your AC Ready For Spring With a Tune-Up

Spring is here, and soon the sun will be shining, flowers will bloom, and the weather will start to get warmer. When you begin your spring cleaning around the house, don’t forget that your air conditioner needs some TLC too! To prepare your cooling system for the warmer weather, scheduling a tune-up from Rebmann is in your best interest. Not only will it help to keep your system running smoothly, it will help your home stay safe and cool when you need it.

Benefits of a Spring AC Tune-up

Your AC needs to be inspected at least once a year – this is especially important before the warm weather hits. This allows a professional to check the shape and working condition of your unit. If any areas of concern are detected, your service tech will be able to address them before they have a chance to escalate. With a little attention along the way, your air conditioner will be able to provide cool comfort to your home for years to come!

  • Reduced stress on your AC. Any AC that is running inefficiently is working overtime to meet the cooling demands of your home. It’s also using more electricity just to function, which can reflect on your electric bill.
  • Improved air quality and overall health. Did you know that an old or damaged air conditioner can negatively impact the air quality in your home? Debris like dust, pet dander, or mold can build up in your equipment or duct system. This can cause asthma symptoms to worsen and other breathing related illnesses to pop up.
  • Higher efficiency. If your AC is running inefficiently, it’s sucking up far more electricity than necessary. To fully meet the cooling needs of your home, your air conditioner should have a tune-up.
  • Lower utility bills. Have you noticed a spike in your electric bill? It could be caused by your air conditioner isn’t working properly. A professional tune-up will help save you money on your utilities.
  • Better cooling and increased comfort. No one likes when it’s uncomfortably hot, but extreme heat can be dangerous for some. The young and the elderly are especially at risk, so it’s important that your home stays cool in the heat. After a tune-up, your cooling system will be able to keep your home effortlessly cool and comfortable.

Why Choose Rebmann?

Here at Rebmann, we offer a wide range of services to help keep things running smoothly in your home. Our comprehensive tune-up leaves no area of your cooling system unchecked!
