Why Should I Invest in Central AC?

Summer may feel far away, but it’s still a good idea to think about your indoor comfort needs before it arrives. Here in Long Island, we’ve had record-breaking heat in recent years. Because of this, it might be time to make the jump to central AC. Here are some reasons why you should install a central air conditioning system before the summer heat arrives.

  1. Better efficiency. Central air has made some big jumps in efficiency in recent years. If not managed properly, central air can waste a lot of money on unnecessary cooling. However, there are now all sorts of features like smart thermostats, zoning capabilities, and ductless central AC systems out now. These can all cut back on energy waste, especially when the system is running while no one’s home.
  2. Straightforward maintenance. Central air maintenance is fairly basic. All you need to do is give it an annual inspection from a professional. If you give it regular maintenance, the average central air system can last ten to fifteen years. After that, you’re likely better off getting a new system to avoid costly repairs and to make use of more efficient air conditioning technology.
  3. House-wide cooling. One of the most obvious advantages of a central air system is the fact that it can cool your entire house with one unit. While some people may be able to have adequate cooling with one or two window units, any more than that and the bills may become too much. If you plan to stay in your current home for several years, central air is likely your best option.
  4. Much quieter. Your average window air conditioner makes a great deal of noise when operating. This can be annoying during the day and make it hard to sleep at night. Central AC units are much quieter in comparison.
  5. More space inside. Instead of being stuck in your window, the central system for your central air is located by the side of your house. This can help you save on space indoors and keep your house looking modern. No more awkward-looking ACs sticking out of your window!

5 Signs to Call for Professional Heat Pump Repair

Heat pumps are a kind of home heating systems that work year-round to keep you comfortable. By moving heat to where it’s needed, it can work wonders as an auxiliary heat source. However, your heat pump can run into its own set of problems that require professional repair work. Our heat pump experts can help you identify a heat pump in need of our professional touch.

Here are five signs your heat pump needs our professional repair work:

Cycling problems

Heat pumps work by circulating refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. A heat pump facing problems may turn on and off every few minutes instead of properly cycling. This problem can wear down your heat pump and hurt its overall lifespan if not corrected. There’s no single cause for cycling problems, so you’ll need professional assistance to diagnose and fix the problem.

Disruptive noises

Loud noises are a common sign that an appliance needs repairs. Internal problems with your heat pump may cause it to make loud noises while it’s operating. Like with cycling problems, there are many possible causes for the noise. The best way to deal with this problem is by calling a professional.

Stuck reversing valve

Heat pumps can reverse their heating process to help cool your home during hotter weather. However, if the reversing valve gets stuck, the heat pump won’t be able to switch between heating and cooling. It’s easy to tell what the problem is in this case, but you’ll still need a professional’s help to properly fix the problem.

Retirement age

Old age is another major reason appliances become less reliable and inefficient. If you have the manufacturer’s instructions for your heat pump, you might be able to find when you should expect to replace it. On average, fifteen years is generally when heat pumps should be replaced. However, this number can change depending on the model, the manufacturer, and how well you’ve maintained yours.

Heightened energy bills

Whether caused by old age, worn parts, or inactivity, poor energy efficiency is another common problem for heat pumps and other appliances. Poor energy efficiency means an appliance has to use more electricity to properly work, which means you’ll spend more on its operation. Also, since inefficient appliances have to work harder, they tend to wear down quicker. Giving your heat pump regular maintenance can keep it efficient and avoid a premature breakdown.

6 Benefits of an Oil to Gas Conversion

If you live in an older home around the Long Island area, your home may have an older heating system that relies on oil. Recently, it’s become apparent that natural gas is a more reliable and efficient way to heat homes. However, if you live in a home that uses oil, don’t fret! At Rebmann, we can help you modernize your heating through an oil to gas conversion. As for why you’d want to switch, there are plenty of good reasons.

Here are six reasons you should call for our help with an oil to gas conversion:

It’s cleaner more efficient

Oil heating equipment for older homes tends to be somewhat inefficient at processing oil. On average, oil heating has an efficiency of 50% – 80%. On the other hand, natural gas heating is usually over 90% efficient. Also, natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel available.

Become less reliant on foreign instability

The United States of America is the world’s greatest producer of oil. However, we’re still reliant on other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, that can produce plenty of oil. About a quarter of the total global oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. This means that the instability in the region can cause major spikes in the price of oil. Not to mention fluctuations caused by global politics in general. Meanwhile, natural gas has a more stable price and is less likely to fluctuate dramatically.

Save space in your home

One of the physical benefits of a gas furnace is that it’s smaller than its oil versions. Getting a natural gas furnace can help you save a bit of space by switching out your oil model.

It’s a cost-effective investment

Natural gas heating is generally less expensive than oil heating. Switching heating systems will cost a good deal of money for the infrastructure, but it’s an investment worth making. You’ll earn your investment back with interest by switching to natural gas.

It can raise your home’s value

When making big changes to your home, you always want to consider how it’ll affect its resale value. Modernizing your home is always a good way to improve that value. Having an efficient and effective heating system is a big draw for potential buyers.

It’s easy to deliver

Many communities in the Northeast have dedicated gas lines that pump natural gas to homes. With oil, you always have to keep a close eye on how much you have so you don’t run out. Don’t know if your home is connected to a natural gas line? Call your local town hall or gas company to learn more.

6 Reasons to Get Boiler Maintenance in New York

The official start of winter is only two months away, but the cold weather will be arriving sooner. That means it’s time to bring out the boiler to help heat your home. However, before you start running it, now would be a good time to get it fixed up. The downtime has likely worn it down and giving it maintenance is a great idea. Boilers that don’t get properly serviced have a reputation for failing catastrophically, so we highly suggest getting a boiler inspection for your New York home.

Here are six reasons you should call Rebmann and schedule boiler maintenance for your New York home:

Follow warranty stipulations

No matter what boiler manufacturer you choose, they’ll likely have an important stipulation in the warranty. You’ll often have to give their products regular maintenance and inspections. Not doing this will void the warranty, which prevents you from getting any money in case of a breakdown.

Increase your boiler’s life

Boilers are generally expensive, and you’ll want yours to work as long as it can so you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Regular inspections and professional maintenance can help your boiler run for as long as possible. On average, well-maintained boilers can last up to ten to fifteen years.

Keep it energy efficient

Boilers have a lot of complex parts, and some parts wear out faster than others. Regular inspections allow us to identify worn parts that can be replaced or fixed. Doing this will help your boiler will use less energy to heat your home, saving you money.

Avoid carbon monoxide and catastrophe

Running boilers make carbon monoxide, but they have an exhaust pipe that safely vents it outside. However, poorly-maintained boilers can suffer damage to the exhaust pipes. This can let the deadly, odorless gas into your home. Also, boiler explosions are a serious threat, so don’t let yours get that neglected!

Lower energy costs

Boilers are power-hungry, being beaten only by HVAC systems in their annual energy usage. However, you can save up to 10% on your boiler’s energy if you give it regular maintenance. Also, having a healthy boiler means you’re less likely to have to get costly repairs.

Legal requirements

Since boilers can be dangerous when they’re worn down, parts of the country have laws that require boiler-owners to get regular maintenance and inspections. The laws come with fines for those that keep poorly-maintained boilers. These laws encourage boiler-owners to be safe, so make sure your boiler stays healthy.

5 Signs to Call For a Water Heater Replacement in New York

Your home’s water heater is an important part of your daily life, but it won’t last forever. One day, you’ll need to get a water heater replacement, and you’ll preferably want to get it before yours breaks down. To replace it before disaster strikes, you need to be able to tell when your water heater is having severe problems. At Rebmann, we know all about water heaters and can help give you the knowledge you need to keep your home dry.

Here are five signs that it’s time to order a water heater replacement:

Not enough hot water

Your water heater is the source of your home’s hot water. If you have the temperature properly set and you aren’t getting hot water, you know there’s a problem. There are many reasons this could be happening, and some are unique to different types of water heaters. Electric water heaters might require you to check the circuit breaker while gas water heaters may need their pilot light relit. In very cold weather, pipes and water heaters may freeze if they don’t have enough insulation. Other problems hurting your hot water supply may include a defective thermometer, a build-up of sediment, and a worn heating element. Also, you might have a water heater that can’t provide enough hot water for your home. Give us a call and we can help find the right water heater for you.

Rusty water

There are two common reasons your home’s water looks and tastes rusty. The exact reason generally depends on what temperature the rusty water is. If you’re only getting rust in the hot water, you likely have a damaged water heater. However, if every temperature is resulting in rust, a pipe in your plumbing may be having problems. Either way, you should call our professionals as soon as you can to confirm the source and prevent any damage. Also, you can help confirm your water heater has a problem by draining a few buckets of hot water from the heater directly. If you’re still getting rust by the time you fill the third bucket, your water heater needs a replacement. You can often see rust around the water inlet or pressure release valve if the tank is having rust problems.

Leaks

Old and damaged water heaters are prone to leaking. However, you might not spot the leaks if you’re not keeping an eye on your water heater. Some leaks aren’t as severe as others. If a leak is coming from any fittings, connections, or the temperature-pressure-release-valve, a plumber can fix them with little difficulty. However, if damage to the tank is causing the leak, your only option is to replace the tank.

Strange noises

You don’t have to worry about the occasional mild noises from your water heater. Plenty of appliances make some slight noise once in a while. However, loud popping, cracking, or rumbling noises are a serious concern. Those noises are signs of sediment build-up in the tank, which makes it hard for the unit to run. As tank water heaters operate, sediment can build up at the bottom of the tank, and will eventually harden as it heats and cools. The air pockets the sediment makes can make noise, and the sediment can also make your water heater less efficient and more likely to crack. If not fixed with flushing and cleaning, the tank can become damaged and start leaking, which can only be fixed with a replacement.

Old age

Water heaters are not something that gets better with age. On average, well-kept tank water heaters can last ten to fifteen years. For best results, start thinking about replacements when your water heater is nine or ten years old. Don’t know when yours was installed? Look at the water heater’s serial number and the manufacturer’s information.  The serial number can tell you when it was manufactured, but each manufacturer has a different way of displaying the manufacturing date. You’ll need to do some research, but the manufacturer’s website can be a good place to start.

5 Reasons to Call for a Furnace Inspection in New York

Fall has officially started, which means it’s time to think about how you’ll keep your home warm. Owning a furnace is a good start, but you also have to consider that your furnace has been inactive for about half a year. This means your furnace is likely dusty and slightly worn-out. To ensure it’ll work, we suggest getting a furnace inspection for your New York home. That way, you’ll know your furnace will work at its best.

Here are five reasons getting a furnace inspection for your New York home is a great idea:

Gauge your furnace’s health

Getting a furnace inspection can give you a good idea about your furnace’s health. This lets you make an informed decision on whether to replace your furnace. If you schedule your inspection early this season, you’ll also have plenty of time to find a new furnace.

Extend your furnace’s life

Like all of your appliances and systems, you should get your furnace checked to ensure it’s still working well. Poorly-maintained furnaces tend to die out faster and waste more energy than healthy furnaces. Unhealthy furnaces are much more likely to suddenly break down, as well.

Cheaper than a full repair job

Furnace inspections cost money, but it costs less than having to pay to fix a broken furnace. During our furnace tune-up jobs, we fix any small problems we find with your furnace. By doing this, we’ll keep you from having to deal with your furnace suddenly breaking down.

Better energy efficiency

According to the Department of Energy, about half of the average homeowner’s energy bills come from using the furnace. However, you can reduce this percentage through regular maintenance and inspections. Many problems can reduce your furnace’s efficiency, but you can avoid them by staying on top of your furnace’s health. A well-maintained furnace will use about 30% less energy than normal.

Prevent dangerous leaks

Having a gas furnace can be dangerous if they’re not properly maintained. Malfunctioning gas furnaces can release carbon monoxide into your house, and it can be deadly to people and many animals. Also, you might have to deal with a house fire if your furnace starts leaking the flammable gas used to fuel it.

Prepare for Winter and Perform an AC Shutdown!

In just over a week, summer will turn to fall and the temperatures will start to drop. The cooler weather may be nice for us, but it isn’t so nice for our outdoor electronics, most notably your AC. Not only will you not be using it during the winter, but the outside unit will be exposed to the elements. To safely protect it, you’ll need to perform a complete AC shutdown. It’s a process that requires more than flipping a switch, but Rebmann can help you learn how to do it.

Here’s what you need to do to perform an AC shutdown:

Finish your repairs

You want to make sure your AC doesn’t have any outstanding problems before you retire it for the winter. Call someone to help finish any repairs that your AC needs before starting your AC shutdown. Failing to do so can result in the problem getting worse over the winter and catching you off-guard when you bring it back out.

Turn off your AC unit’s power

Turning off your AC doesn’t refer to whether it’s blowing or not. It’s about whether your AC is getting any power whatsoever. An AC that’s still on may turn on briefly during the winter if there’s a warm spell. This will result in the outside condenser sucking in ice and snow, damaging it. To fully shut down your AC, find the breaker switch for the AC and shut it off. You can usually find it on the side of your house or under a flip-up lid near the condenser. Try not to forget about the breaker switch over the winter. You’ll need to flip it back on when you want to use your AC again.

Clean off the condenser

When you’ve got the power off, you’ll want to clean off the condenser and the area around it. Grab a broom and use it to sweep any debris on or around the condenser, such as leaves and branches. After that, take a hose set to low pressure and clean off the outside cabinet. Next, you should closely examine the condenser to make sure the seals are tight and there isn’t any visible damage. If you see anything, let us know next time one of our professionals helps you. You should also look and see if the filter needs replacing or cleaning.

Cover it up

When the condenser dries off, the final step is to cover it with a waterproof cover. Hardware stores often have them for sale, but a waterproof tarp will work if it completely covers the condenser. Also, make sure you secure the tarp with bungee rope to ensure it won’t blow away.

4 Benefits of Frequent Drain Cleaning in New York

Like any area of your home, drains can fall into disrepair and need some attention. Whether its loose hairs, food debris, or dried cleaning products, it’s likely that you’ll have to deal with drains clogging. You can call Rebmann to help alleviate your drain clogs and perform a professional drain cleaning. However, what you should be doing is performing frequent drain cleaning so they don’t clog in the first place. There are many benefits to getting frequent drain cleaning for your New York home.

Here are four drain cleaning benefits for your New York home:

Efficient draining

Unsurprisingly, clogged drains have difficulty draining water and any debris that goes down them. When they’re clear, water will quickly drain down them and you won’t have to worry about overflowing or instances of standing water. This is especially important for toilet drains, as backflow problems involving sewage can be especially nasty.

Improved pipe lifespan

Among the things that can buildup in your drains are various chemical deposits. These chemicals can cause damage to the pipes they’re in and eventually cause a leak. By getting routine cleaning for your pipes, you can keep your pipes from getting corroded, improving their lifespan.

Prevent foul odors

You probably think toilets are the only parts of your plumbing system that can get smelly. However, any dirty drain can raise a big stink if it doesn’t get a proper and regular cleaning. Mold spores grow best in dark, damp areas, and your drains have both in excess. Even the regular flow of water may not be enough to wash those spores away. By diligently cleaning your drains, you can prevent the buildup of mold spores and bacteria that could make your home reek.

Avoid damage to your home

Did you know that chemicals that buildup in your drains can corrode the pipes and cause leaks? Also, you know how backflow can happen from a clogged pipe? When these things happen, your home can face water damage that requires repairs. It’s especially nasty when the leak comes from a clogged pipe full of sewage. All of those disgusting chemicals and bacteria will be able to get loose and damage your walls and floors. Frequently cleaning your drains can prevent the problems that lead to backups and water damage.

Why call Rebmann to clean my drains?

5 Signs Your Water Heater Needs a Repair in New York

As one of your home’s major appliances, it’s not surprising to hear that water heaters can come across their share of problems. However, this doesn’t mean you should run out and get a replacement whenever something goes wrong. Many of these issues are ones that can be fixed by trained professionals. By calling for a repair, you can save money by fixing a problem before it becomes permanent. Rebmann can help you learn when you should call for a water heater repair in your New York home.

Here are five issues that can be solved by a water heater repair in your New York home:

Noise issues

Like all major appliances, you can expect a bit of noise to come from your water heater. However, sediment build-ups can cause louder popping and crackling noises that necessitate some maintenance. As sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank and solidifies, it makes noises when the air pockets inside the solid sediment start boiling. Too much sediment inside the tank can cause it to corrode or even crack. Annually flushing the tank can go a long way to preventing sediment issues.

Rusty water

Having your home’s water supply become rusty generally means you need new pipes. However, if the rust is limited to your hot water, the problem is with your water heater. Both of these are serious issues that should have you calling us. Oftentimes, when your water tank is corroding from the inside out, you’ll need to buy a new one before the old one breaks.

Mineral problems

If your home has hard water, you might have to deal with various problems from the minerals in it. Minerals can build up around your water tank’s heating elements. This will make it harder to heat the tank or even cause the heating element to overheat. Also, minerals can build up in the pipes themselves and block off the water, reducing the water pressure. Buying a water softener for your home can help make your water softer.

Heating problems

Water heaters are supposed to heat water. If yours isn’t doing that, then you have a problem. Depending on what your water heater uses to heat the water, you’ll have to either relight the pilot light or check the circuit breaker. Sometimes you might not have enough heat because it’s very cold outside and your pipes need more insulation. However, if power, heating, and insulation aren’t helping, you might be dealing with built-up sediment, a faulty thermostat, or a worn heating element.

Leaks

A leaking tank is an obvious problem. However, it’s one you might not notice if you don’t regularly check the tank. At best, the leaking might be coming from the fittings, temperature release valve, or connections. If those aren’t leaking, the tank may have developed a crack and needs replacing.

The Benefits of Backflow Prevention in New York

As you might know, the public water system gets treated by a water treatment plant before it reaches your home. However, there are a variety of ways that this treated water can get recontaminated. One of these ways is backflow. The contaminants that get into the water via backflow can cause a variety of health problems in ingested. That’s why it so important to get your home backflow prevention in New York. By doing this, you’ll keep your water supply from being contaminated by backflow.

What exactly causes backflow?

Backflow contamination refers to when clean water gets contaminated by water that has been already used. This usually happens when there’s an abnormal water pressure differential. For example, if a fire hydrant gets opened up, this can drop water pressure. When this happens, water starts flowing backward into public lines. If you’re using pesticides on your lawn, water near your sprinklers can get sucked into the water line and contaminate the public drinking supply. This is where a backflow prevention system comes in handy.

How does backflow prevention in New York work?

The first step in getting a backflow preventer is to test for backflow. If you call us, we can tell if backflow is happening in your system. From there, our company can recommend a backflow preventer to keep your water supply safe. Backflow prevention systems work by only letting water flow one direction. They work best when put at cross-connections where contamination can occur if backflow happens.

Backflow preventers are very important in keeping your water supply safe. This includes both your personal water and the public’s water. In fact, some districts in Long Island require homes to have backflow preventers and properly maintain them. Despite this, many Long Island homeowners either don’t have one or don’t know what one is. With over 80 years of industry experience, we want to help everyone in Long Island and the surrounding areas have a safe water supply.
